Hillary Clinton plans to accept the job of secretary of state offered by Barack Obama, who is reaching out to former rivals to build a broad coalition administration, the Guardian has learned.
Obama's advisers have begun looking into Bill Clinton's foundation, which distributes millions of dollars to Africa to help with development, to ensure that there is no conflict of interest. But Democrats do not believe that the vetting is likely to be a problem.
Clinton would be well placed to become the country's dominant voice in foreign affairs, replacing Condoleezza Rice. Since being elected senator for New York, she has specialised in foreign affairs and defence. Although she supported the war in Iraq, she and Obama basically agree on a withdrawal of American troops.
Clinton, who still harbours hopes of a future presidential run, had to weigh up whether she would be better placed by staying in the Senate, which offers a platform for life, or making the more uncertain career move to the secretary of state job.
I do have to wonder why this announcement is coming from a UK paper and it was the Huffington Post that declared the she was offered the job, yet the larger US media outlets are still coming up with excuses as to why Hillary will not be offered the job and even joking about what an issue vetting Bill Clinton is... some of which I found down right offensive.
I guess CNN, ABC and MSNBC haven't gotten the memo yet... the election is over, you can stop attacking the Clintons now. They don't threaten the election of "The One" anymore....

How is Hillary going to be an effective Sec of State when she cannot please or control her own husband?

I don't see how this would facilitate her vision of becoming President. She would not set policy, policy would still be subject to the Obama inner circle and she essentially would be on a leash. Does anyone really think she is all of a sudden going to be a part of the inner circle? She would get the lime light at the discretion of Obama. Yeah right, Hillary says this, Hillary says that, Hillary did this, she did that as SOS and Obama sits grinning in the background, nodding in approval? Get real! What happens to former Secretaries of State? Hell, the general Public couldn't name a single one - they exit the stage with their boss, that's what, end of story, write the memoirs that won't be bought, fade in obscurity - this hardly fits the ego of a woman who should have gotten the nomination and who most likely would be our President. I don't like her Liberalism but fair is fair, she was robbed but like any career politician, her ego dictates her actions and I don't see how being SOS helps her ego. If Obama goes down in flames after 4 years, she is not a Senator, just a former SOS with limited exposure. How is that going to help her get the nod 4 years later? She will be minus a base of power for 4 years.
anonymous, I'm disappointed. You forgot the one about Hillary being the sole cause of global warming. And, pray tell, tell us all those secrets about how to please and control your husband and how learning those secrets helps you to become an outstanding SOS. Inquiring minds want to know.
I will be very disappointed if it turns out to be true that Hillary will be Obama's SOS. I greatly respect her judgment but, as Powell has shown us, being SOS doesn't mean that you can actually have a substantial influence on a president's foreign policy and it can easily end up destroying your reputation.

I think Obama is trying to follow Lincoln's "Team of Rivals" example, but, as Senator Lloyd Benson might have said, "I've studied A. Lincoln, I admire A. Lincoln, and you, Mr. Obama, are no Abraham Lincoln."
Obama would be better off having Bill C. as ambassador to the UN, although I also don't see Bill accepting Obama as his boss.

The reason I don't blame Hillary for global warming is because it is not man made (or woman made for that matter).
Do yourself a favor and investigate who the chairs and vice-chairs of the IPCC are.

Global warming is a natural cyclic phenomenon. The IPCC is nothing but a group of fear mongers and professional liars.

In addition, the Global Warming data that was repeated from Sept to Oct was the Russian data and was done without Hansen's knowledge. Hansen still had data points from all over the world.
Also, what the hell does the global warming debate have to do with any of this? I don't know why you are responding to what was meant as a sarcastic exaggeration of your original post, not to mention the fact that you sound like a tinfoil loon?

if Hillary becomes the Sec. State, hopefully she will be able to concentrate on country-centric issues without being distracted by other drama or her career plans
